I first joined FWCC in 2022 when Coach Fabian was introduced as the new head coach of the Raffles A division cross country coach. I was previously part of my school’s cross-country team in both primary and secondary school.
I recall that in December 2021, my fitness was at the lowest it had ever been, to the extent that I could not even complete a 5-kilometer timed trial, my previous coach resorted to making me work on my base and I was essentially back to square 1. While the rest of my teammates had transitioned to faster and more anaerobic workouts, I was placed on a fixed running regime of 10 kilometers at an easy pace every other day. I was extremely demoralized and had little hope for a satisfactory performance at the 2022 NSG.

In January 2022, my previous coach left the school and we were introduced to our new coach, coach Fabian William. I had previously already heard of this coach through some of my teammates and seniors who went to FWCC. Given that we only had around 4 months until the start of nationals, we were made to do fast and shorter workouts, that would condition us for our respective events for both track and cross country. Almost right away, I noticed major improvements in my aerobic capacity and fitness. It was truly this glimmer of hope that I needed, to show that I could potentially contribute to my team during nationals. Of course, this period was not without its setbacks but unexpectedly, the A division girls’ team emerged champions for the 2022 cross country championships, a feat we would have never thought possible in December of 2021. Words cannot describe my immense gratitude for Coach Fabian William as well as the other dedicated coaches of FWCC who have constantly pushed me to my limits. Over this period of 5 months, I managed to rekindle my passion for cross country and even ran the standard chartered half marathon recently. All this is attributed to the dedication of the coaches who have created a positive and conducive training environment for all the athletes to thrive, as well as being flexible in their training to cater to athletes with different strengths and weaknesses. Overall, my experience with coach Fabian and the other coaches of FWCC was extremely positive and I truly felt that the coaches cared for the athlete’s wellbeing, never pushing us beyond what they knew we were capable of. They were also very responsive to feedback from me and my teammates, when it came to injuries and concerns with regard to training. I was fortunate to have been able to train under coach Fabian and the other coaches at FWCC.
